What happened

A pickup truck drove onto a youth soccer field at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex, killing a child and an adult and injuring others. Police said a preliminary review found the Chevrolet pickup had been parked near the fields before it entered one field and struck children and adults. The complex was hosting youth soccer games, with families gathered to watch children play; the driver’s child was playing on a different field. Police identified the people killed as 6-year-old Adrian Cole and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson, Kansas. Police Chief Joe Sullivan said bystanders provided lifesaving aid before first responders arrived. The 34-year-old driver was released without charges while investigators await toxicology results and a mechanical exam.
