The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Sunday for a third time to let new U.S. Postal Service mail-ballot rules take effect. The emergency request seeks a stay of U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani’s preliminary injunction, issued Friday, blocking enforcement ahead of the November midterms. Solicitor General D. John Sauer said ballots have begun going out in North Carolina and more states, including Alabama on September 9, will soon mail them. The rules would stop USPS from sending ballots in states that have not supplied citizenship-based eligible-voter lists.
Analysis & opinion
Anti-democratic voting attackMostly Left
Trump’s attempt to restrict mail-in voting is an anti-democratic effort to tilt elections in his favor rather than let voters decide freely. The campaign threatens fair elections by sowing confusion, testing likely illegal limits, and weakening confidence in the constitutional order.
