What happened

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan questioned during a debate whether Democratic challenger Mary Peltola had received questions in advance after seeing her consult notes. The moderators said neither candidate had received them beforehand, and Sullivan later said he believed the moderators. The exchange came in the final scheduled debate of a close Alaska Senate race that could affect Senate control. Peltola said she used notes because she was prepared, while Sullivan later criticized her online for reading from a script. The candidates also traded attacks over Washington ties, staff-treatment allegations, the Iran war and energy costs. Repeated interruptions and personal exchanges led a moderator to warn them to show decorum. The race remained a toss-up, with Republicans trying to defend their Senate majority.
