What happened

Trump signed an order waiving newly authorized Russia-related sanctions and tariffs shortly before they were set to begin. The move leaves the measures suspended unless he or Secretary of State Marco Rubio takes further action. The measures came from the Lindsey Graham Act, signed in September to pressure Russia over its war in Ukraine by targeting major buyers of Russian energy. The administration said a diesel arrangement with Russia could ease high prices and encourage peace steps; Trump said Russia would first supply more than 300,000 tons. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the waiver wrong, saying it helped Russia fund the war. Rubio said Trump would take up to 60 days to review the waiver’s economic impact.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the waiver as a rare bipartisan break with Trump, with Republican criticism giving the story its force. Joe.My.God highlighted bipartisan condemnation and, quoting Nikki Haley, warned that waiving sanctions would help Putin against the West. The Daily Beast framed Graham’s sister and successor as refusing to confront her patron while Trump trashed Lindsey Graham’s legislative legacy.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the waiver as a risky pressure shift, stressing fuel costs and peace incentives while noting Republican unease. FOX News framed the move as a gamble over whether incentives could move Moscow where sanctions had not. Fox Business emphasized warnings from prominent Republicans that relief could embolden Putin during the war.
