What happened

Ukraine’s military has faced speed restrictions on Starlink or Starshield connections inside Ukraine, with systems disconnecting when vehicles move faster than about 161 km/h. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the limit was still blocking some military uses. Ukraine relies on SpaceX satellite links for battlefield communications and drone operations; Starshield is the military-focused service for the U.S. government, while Starlink is the commercial network. Zelenskyy said the limits appeared planned and tied to a U.S. government message, while President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied ordering any slowdown. Republican lawmakers Mike Turner and Kevin Cramer called for a congressional investigation. The cause remains unclear.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the dispute around Rubio’s response, confusion over access, and the strike-policy stakes. Daily Beast said Rubio attacked Zelenskyy’s understanding instead of simply explaining the satellite-service problems, and that his account muddied the issue by denying access despite contrary evidence. Al Jazeera separated commercial Starlink service from the military-grade Starshield access Ukraine wants for strikes deep inside Russia.
