What happened

Border czar Tom Homan said Rep. Ilhan Omar could be denaturalized if evidence proves she lied during naturalization, which could lead to deportation. Federal agents had searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., home under a judicially authorized warrant and seized her cellphone and other materials. The investigation centers on allegations that Omar or family members gave false information on immigration paperwork. Omar came to the United States from Somalia in 1995 and became a citizen through her father in 2000. She says she was 17 then; investigators are examining whether she was 18. Homan said investigators described a strong case, while Omar denied wrongdoing. Authorities have not filed charges.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as state power aimed at a political critic, with citizenship threats showing the stakes. MEDIAite emphasized Barack Obama’s warning that the government targeted a law-abiding elected official for criticizing the president. Democracy Now! led with Homan confirming that Omar could face denaturalization and deportation. AlterNet focused on election-season restraint and Justice Department independence.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the case as an accountability test, with the outcome tied to proof rather than Omar’s status. Daily Mail highlighted Homan’s view that immigration fraud, if proved, could cost Omar citizenship and lead to deportation. Fox News leaned into Democratic double-standard claims, pointing to political targeting disputes from Obama’s time in office.
