Updated Oct 19, 11:15pm ET

Vice President JD Vance declined to endorse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s reelection bid, saying he would not get involved in Israel’s election. The refusal came one day after President Donald Trump backed Netanyahu, calling him a strong partner against Iran and warning that he would not do the work against Iran himself if Israel chose another leader. Vance said he endorses American candidates and is focused on the U.S. midterms. He stressed that his stance was not support for or opposition to Netanyahu. Netanyahu thanked Trump, calling him a great friend of Israel. Netanyahu’s vote is approaching, while Vance said his attention remains on U.S. races.

Left-leaning outlets framed Vance’s move as a split with Trump and questioned his stated foreign-election restraint. CNN emphasized the break, pointing to Vance’s earlier support for Viktor Orbán as a reason the neutrality claim stood out. Daily Kos tied Trump and Netanyahu together, arguing the alliance could hurt Republicans by reviving anger over Iran and foreign entanglements.

Right-leaning outlets treated Vance’s stance as a divergence, while stressing that it was not an anti-Netanyahu move. Fox News highlighted the contrast with Trump’s strong support, while noting Vance cast his position as focus on American elections. It also leaned into Trump’s case for Netanyahu as a key U.S. ally against Iran.
