What happened

Masked Israeli settlers attacked a European diplomatic group visiting Taybeh in the occupied West Bank on Saturday. The group included Belgian, French and Polish representatives and Catholic officials. The assault came during the annual Palestinian olive harvest, a vital income source for many families, as settler attacks have hit farmers and villages across the West Bank. A day earlier, settlers attacked Palestinians and injured a U.S. photojournalist covering the harvest. Israeli military and police condemned the Taybeh attack and said an investigation was underway; the military said no soldiers were there. Netanyahu's office said the visit was uncoordinated and urged caution. Belgian, French and Polish officials called for accountability. Police said they were still seeking suspects.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the violence as a campaign to block Palestinians from harvesting olives on their own land, not isolated clashes. The Guardian cast the attacks as the latest attempt to stop Palestinians harvesting olives on their land. PBS NewsHour cited residents and rights groups who said Israeli forces had aided, protected or failed to stop settlers. On diplomatic safety, CNN quoted the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs calling attacks on the diplomatic corps “absolutely unacceptable” and demanding Israeli explanations and accountability.
