Amazon Miami Crash Kills Five

An Amazon cargo jet overshot a runway at Miami International Airport, killing five.

At least five people were killed and five others injured when an Amazon-branded Boeing 767-300 cargo plane, operating as 21 Air Flight 7598, overran a runway at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. Sunday after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft struck multiple vehicles near the airport perimeter, breached fencing and caught fire, sending three injured people to a trauma center in critical condition and two others to a hospital. The crash triggered an airport ground stop of about three hours, and federal investigators are examining the cause.

Trump Envoys Hold Kyiv Talks

U.S. envoys pursue Ukraine peace talks after meeting Putin, with no clear breakthrough.

U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday, their first official Ukraine visit in the Trump administration’s renewed push to end Russia’s full-scale invasion. The visit followed more than three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. No breakthrough was announced; Witkoff called the Kyiv discussions substantive and said the U.S. wants another round of negotiations involving Washington, Kyiv and Moscow. Zelenskyy said Ukraine needs security guarantees and expects the war to continue into winter.

AfD Wins Thuringia Election

Germany’s far-right AfD won Thuringia, but rivals may block it from governing.

Alternative for Germany (AfD) was projected to win Saxony-Anhalt’s state election with about 44% to 44.5% of the vote, putting it first in a German state contest. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats trailed at about 18%, with smaller parties competing to clear the parliamentary threshold. The AfD remained short of an outright majority, leaving its ability to govern dependent on whether other parties maintain Germany’s informal “firewall” against coalitions with it. If it reaches power, it would lead Germany’s first far-right state government since World War II.

Establishment Upheaval

Mostly Center

The AfD’s breakthrough is shaking Germany’s postwar political order and forcing the mainstream parties to confront a challenge they can no longer contain easily. Its success threatens the old strategy of excluding the far right from power and could push Germany, and even Europe, into a deeper political crisis.

Elite Failure

Leans Right

Germany’s ruling class and media have failed to take voters’ problems seriously, helping drive a right-wing revolt. Invoking Nazi history or dismissing AfD supporters obscures the real grievances produced by the country’s recent leadership.
